Recently Wagenborg played an important role in a special project: the transportation and installation of the bicycle and pedestrian bridge "De Netkous". This bridge is part of the project “Green connection”. This almost 200 meters long bridge crosses the Betuwe rail track and the highway A15 and will connect the south of Rotterdam with the green area outside the city. 

From Flushing to Rotterdam

For the installation of the bridge it was transported to Rotterdam in two parts. The bridge sections, with lengths of 100 and 90 meters and a weight of respectively 350 and 325 tons, were moved  onto a barge  by SPMT’s at the site of manufacturer VDS Staal- en Machinebouw in Nieuwdorp. For this RORO operations, the SPMTs were configured in two dolly sets   of 6 axle lines each, double connected, with a power pack unit. The pontoon transport went from Flushing to the ECT City Terminal in the Port of Rotterdam. The bridge parts were unloaded on Monday, August 19th with two sheerlegs to be put in a temporary storage for a couple of days.

Exceptional transport on the highway A15

The bridge sections were transported in the night of August 22-23 from the ECT City Terminal over the nearby flyover to the construction site along the A15. For this operation, all access roads to and from the A15 were completely blocked. The transport by 2x16-axle conventional trailers was watched by a large audience.. Despite the limited driving space  - especially the tight corner at the terminal - the Wagenborg truck drivers showed their craftsmanship by maneuvering the bridge sections safely and on schedule to the construction site.

Installing the bridge sections

During the following  two nights, the southern and northern bridge section were successively installed onto its foundation. During this work, there was a full shutdown of the A15 between Vaanplein and Benelux. For the lifting job, Wagenborg used 2 x 500 ton mobile cranes and a Demag CC2200 crawler crane. The crawler crane was placed in the middle and mobile cranes next to the audio screen (acoustic screen?) (south part) and rail track side (north part). The bridge sections were moved per SPMTbetween the crane hooks (configuration identical to the operations in Flushing). The cranes lifted the sections in a controlled manner to their final destination on their foundations.
