After this, the RORO carrier is ready to serve again on her liner service between Piteå and Terneuzen for Smurfit Kappa. Harmless refrigerant

During these special surveys, Wagenborg will carry out various “green” improvements to further improve the green character of both vessels. For instance, for the cooling installations the refrigerant will be changed by a harmless alternative for the ozone layer.

Alternative ultrasonic system to remove biofilm

In addition, a new ultrasonic system will be installed inside of the sea chests for the box coolers. This system will create ultrasonic waves to remove the biofilm on the box coolers. By using this new method, the current anti fouling system - with a constant flow of cupper particles alongside the box coolers - is unnecessary. By using the new greener alternative ultrasonic system, the vessel does not need to use toxic cupper anymore to remove marine growth. The ultrasonic frequency has been tested and found harmless for marine mammals like whales, seals, and dolphins.

Avoiding oil spills with a special stern tube seal

The stern tube seal will be replaced by a special type of stern tube seal. On the current stern tube seals is no other barrier between the sea and the oil inside the stern tube then the rubber lip seals. When the seal damages, an oil spill is inevitable. With the new system there will be a pressured air chamber between the oil and sea. In case the lip seals fails, oil will enter the air chamber and will be drained to the drain tank.  With no direct oil/sea interface the risk to an oil spill is reduced enormously.

All the additions above will reduce the impact on the environment of both RORO vessels, resulting in a Clean Shipping Index (CSI) of 100 points, which is a high score.

Clean Shipping Index is a Swedish independent and holistic labeling system for the environmental performance of ships, in which CO2, sulfur and nitrogen emissions, onboard chemical use and waste and water management are assessed. With various Wagenborg ship types in the CSI database, Wagenborg has confirmation that it is taking the right steps in terms of the environment.
