"FlorijnAs" is a major development programme in Assen to improve the accessibility of the city. Within this programme, several projects are initiated guiding  the growth of Assen, aswell as   the city’s growing role in the region  in the right direction. The city is financing this programme with the so-called ‘RSP state fund’  ( subsidy for making the North more accessible ). The province of Drenthe and the region Groningen-Assen are also contributing.

‘Blauwe As’ prepares Assen for the future

One of the new projects is the so-called 'Blauwe As”, the creation of a new waterway to improve the accessibility by water in a few years time. With this new waterway Assen will be an attractive destination on the  route IJsselmeer - Meppel - Assen - Groningen - Wadden Sea. Six new, movable bridges, two locks and a new turning basin,  enabling cargo vessels  to turn, will be build. The result will be a huge boost for the city.

‘Blauwe klap’ first new bridge

The first bridge to be installed in this project is the so called ‘Blauwe Klap’, a double car bridge with multiple movable decks. The various steel bridge components, such as bridge decks, the posts and balance parts were transported to Assen and installed by Royal Wagenborg.

Phased implementation of transportation and installation

The bridge components were all transported to the construction site in Assen by trailer  after fabrication. Upon arrival , these components were installed. This concerned respectively  the two posts, two car bridges, two bicycle bridges and two balance parts. The entire transport and installation was executed within a time frame of two weeks.

First the two posts were transported by trailer to Assen. These posts, measuring 11,23 x 1,53 x 3,25m and weighing over ten tonnes, were installed by Wagenborg using a 110 tonnes and a 35 tonnes mobile crane.

Subsequently the four bridge parts could be transported and positioned. All bridge decks were manufactured in Rotterdam and transported over inland waters to Groningen by Wagenborg. The last part of the journey was executed by trailer. The two car bridges, measuring 11,2 x 10,3 x 1,5m and weighing 42 tonnes each, and two bicycle bridges, measuring 10,4 x 9,9 x 1,3m and weighing 21 tonnes each, were installed by  deploying  a 500 tonnes mobile crane.

The balance part on the post comprises of two elements: on the one side the counterweight and on the other side the arm,  lifting the bridge deck. Once the bridge parts were installed the balance parts could be positioned on top of the posts. These balance parts, measuring 15 x 3 x 4.5 m and weighing 65 tonnes each,  were also installed by a 500 tonnes mobile crane, subsequently  the decks were connected to the balance parts.
