DP2 CO2 carrier ‘Carbon Destroyer 1’ nominated for Maritime Ship of the Year Award

The Carbon Destroyer 1 has been nominated for the Maritime Ship of the Year Award. This nomination recognises both the innovative character of the vessel and its contribution to the energy transition.

The ship is Europe’s first dedicated offshore DP2 CO₂ carrier and forms an essential part of Project Greensand — the first operational offshore CO₂ storage facility in Europe. The Carbon Destroyer 1 enables the transport of CO₂ at industrial scale, making permanent offshore storage possible.

With a capacity of approximately 5,000 tonnes per voyage and an annual transport capability of around 600,000 tonnes of CO₂, the vessel provides a direct and measurable contribution to European climate targets.

The Carbon Destroyer 1 was developed and built by Royal Niestern Sander in close cooperation with Royal Wagenborg, INEOS Energy and partners within the North Dutch maritime cluster. From the outset, the project was approached as an integrated design challenge, with safety, system integration and operational reliability considered as one coherent system.

The result is a new type of vessel that is not only technically distinctive, but also scalable and ready for wider application. It offers a practical solution for the growing demand for CO₂ transport within Europe.

The nomination for the Maritime Ship of the Year Award highlights the strength of collaboration within the Dutch maritime sector and underlines its role in delivering tangible solutions for the energy transition.

The award ceremony will take place on November 2 during the Maritime Gala Award.
