First CO₂ tanks installed on Carbon Destroyer 1 – a major milestone in Europe’s flagship CCS project

Royal Wagenborg has reached another significant milestone in the construction of the Carbon Destroyer 1, the first European-built dedicated offshore CO₂ carrier. The installation of the first CO₂ storage tanks marks a crucial step toward completing this pioneering vessel, which will play a key role in carbon capture and storage (CCS) across Europe.

The four massive CO₂ tanks were manufactured by Geldof in Belgium and carefully loaded in Harelbeke under the supervision of Wagenborg. Each tank, measuring 28m meters in length, 6,5m in diameter and with a weight of 190 tons, represents cutting-edge engineering, designed to safely store liquefied CO₂ for transport to offshore storage facilities. This operation required meticulous planning and execution, reflecting Wagenborg’s commitment to reliability and safety.

The installation took place in the port of Delfzijl, where Wagenborg deployed its floating crane Triton. With its impressive lifting capacity, Triton ensured the tanks were positioned with absolute precision on board the Carbon Destroyer 1. This complex operation demonstrates Wagenborg’s ability to deliver integrated heavy-lift and maritime solutions for the energy transition.

Driving the energy transition

The Carbon Destroyer is set to become Europe’s flagship in CO₂ transport, supporting the Greensand CCS project that significantly will contribute to achieving Europe’s climate goals. By enabling the safe and efficient movement of captured CO₂ from industrial sites in Esbjerg to the offshore storage in the Nini-field, this vessel will help reduce emissions and accelerate the shift toward a low-carbon economy.

Partnership and innovation

This milestone builds on the strong collaboration between Wagenborg and INEOS, who signed a multi-year contract for CO₂ transport earlier this year in the presence of HM King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands and HM King Frederik of Denmark. The christening and launch of the Carbon Destroyer 1 marked the start of a new era in sustainable shipping, and today’s achievement brings us one step closer to operational readiness.
