Wagenborg transports and installs second bridge deck for Amsterdam's Schinkel Bridge

An impressive operation on and alongside the water in Amsterdam: this week, Wagenborg successfully transported and installed a new movable bridge deck for the Schinkel Bridge project. By carrying out both the maritime transport and the installation, Wagenborg delivered a fully integrated solution for this important infrastructure project.

The project, first awarded in 2023, comprises the installation of four movable bridge decks. Earlier this year, the first bridge deck (Bridge 9) was successfully installed. With the placement of Bridge 1 this week, another important milestone has been reached. The remaining two bridge decks are scheduled for installation in the first quarter of 2029.

From Friesland to Amsterdam

The 235-ton steel leaf was transported from Sumar, Friesland, to Amsterdam aboard Wagenborg Barge 14, towed by tug Waterlelie. 

The transport itself is a remarkable operation. The journey was carried out in two stages: first, the bascule leaf was transported from Friesland to Amsterdam via the IJsselmeer. Next, the convoy continued deeper into Amsterdam, navigating the city's waterways to reach the installation site. Along the way, Waterlelie and Wagenborg Barge 14 passed no fewer than eleven bridges before arriving at their destination. 

An earlier attempt to complete the voyage had to be aborted due to strong winds. This time, however, conditions were ideal, with calm weather throughout the operation.

Public gathers for bridge installation

At 20:00, the next phase of the operation began. Using three cranes, the bascule leaf was carefully lifted from the barge and installed in its final position.

Thanks to thorough preparation and the strong cooperation between all teams involved, the operation progressed smoothly and was completed ahead of schedule.

The installation also attracted significant public interest. As part of a dedicated event organised by the client, more than one hundred spectators gathered at a designated viewing area to follow the operation. With favourable evening weather, they enjoyed a unique opportunity to watch the bridge deck being lifted into place from a safe and carefully managed location.
