Final CO₂ tanks installed on Carbon Destroyer 1 in Delfzijl
The last CO₂ tanks have recently been safely and successfully installed on board the Carbon Destroyer 1 at the Koninklijke Niestern Sander shipyard in Delfzijl. This vessel is the first CO₂ carrier built in Europe and will be deployed next year in the Greensand Project. The ship is being constructed on behalf of INEOS Energy.
In total, eight tanks have now been installed, providing a combined capacity to transport approximately 5,000 tonnes of liquid CO₂. The carrier will operate between Esbjerg in Denmark and the depleted Nini oil field. The installation of these tanks marks a key milestone in the construction phase of the vessel, which is designed to support European climate objectives.
The tanks were loaded under Wagenborg’s supervision in Harelbeke, Belgium, onto inland vessels. After shipment to Delfzijl, they were discharged one by one at the Wagenborg terminal using the floating crane Triton. Following unloading, the tanks were transported directly to the dock location for installation.
Careful coordination of transport, transshipment, and installation was essential to complete this phase according to schedule and safety standards
Construction of the Carbon Destroyer 1 will continue in the coming months, with the vessel expected to become operational for the Greensand Project next year.
