First successful RORO operation of lock gate in Emden
In a powerful display of precision and teamwork, Wagenborg successfully executed the first Roll-on/Roll-off (RORO) operation of a massive lock gate as part of a prestigious infrastructure project. This milestone underscores Wagenborg’s growing role in complex infrastructure transport projects.

136 axle lines, over 3.000 tonnes, one seamless operation
The operation involved the careful movement of a 2,500-tonne lock gate using 136 axle lines of Self-Propelled Modular Transporters (SPMTs). The total transported weight was over 3.000 tonnes. The lock gate was rolled onto the Wagenborg Barge 10, a seagoing pontoon measuring 100m in length and 33m in width, under the expert coordination of Wagenborg’s heavy lift and towage transport teams. The tugboat Waterstad provided safe and steady support, ensuring the pontoons’s secure positioning for the RORO operation.

Engineering excellence and teamwork
The success of this operation was no coincidence—it was the result of meticulous engineering, precise ballasting, and seamless collaboration. Wouter Siemerink, Wagenborg’s project manager, reflects: “This kind of transport demands craftsmanship. From the engineering phase to the ballasting of the pontoon, every detail was carefully calculated and executed. It is always good to see how our team worked together—towage, heavy transport, engineering—all disciplines aligned to make this happen.”

Strategic growth in infrastructure logistics
This operation is a clear example of how Wagenborg continues to expand its footprint in the infrastructure market. By combining specialized equipment, operational excellence, and synergy with various Wagenborg companies, Wagenborg delivers on its promise of safe, reliable, and sustainable logistics solutions.
The remaining two lock gates are scheduled for transport in the coming months.
