Two lock gates successfully positioned in the Eemshaven basin for testing

Another significant milestone has been reached in the Brunsbüttel lock gate project at Eemshaven. The final two massive lock gates—previously transported from Emden to Eemshaven on the pontoon Wagenborg Barge 11—have now been lifted from the barge and placed in the water for testing. This marks the next phase in a highly complex and carefully orchestrated infrastructure project that highlights Wagenborg’s expertise in heavy transport and lifting operations.

Powerful collaboration along the quay

The lifting operation was executed with impressive precision and strength, thanks to the combined efforts of the floating cranes Matador 3 and Hebo Lift 10. Working in tandem, these heavy-duty cranes lifted each lock gate from the pontoon and lowered it into the basin. After the first gate was placed, two Wagenborg tugboats repositioned the pontoon to prepare for the second lift. The following day, the second lock gate was discharged in the same controlled manner and placed in the water while ensuring both gates remained securely positioned.

Proof of infrastructure expertise

This milestone underscores Wagenborg’s strategic ambition to expand its project portfolio across Northwest Europe. By bringing together in-house maritime expertise, lifting capabilities, and sophisticated logistical coordination, Wagenborg continues to solidify its reputation as a trusted partner in large-scale port infrastructure projects. The successful placement of these lock gates is a clear example of operational excellence, effective teamwork, and delivering on commitments.

Looking ahead

With the lock gates now in place for testing, the project enters its final phase. Wagenborg remains closely involved, ensuring each remaining step is carried out with the same dedication to safety, precision, and responsibility that defines our approach. In 2026, both lock gates are expected to be transported to their final destination in Brunsbüttel by Wagenborg.
