Wagenborg joins panel at Waterborne transport conference in Brussels about zero emission shipping

On November 29th Wagenborg was invited to the Waterborne transport conference in Brussels to join a panel about zero emission shipping. Theo Klimp, fleet director at Wagenborg Shipping and KVNR board member, has reflected on three questions; what do we want to achieve, what did we contribute already and what will we contribute, what other interventions are needed and by whom.

Wagenborg is proud of its innovative strength which is used to reduce our environmental footprint year by year. Sometimes this goes with small steps and now and then we achieve a giant leap forward. Our introduction of the high efficient EasyMax series has proven that a reduction of more than 60% CO2 compared to her peers built at the end of the last century is reachable.

Besides this we invest together with our clients and partners in research and test cases of new technology. Our track record so far shows examples like Shorepower on our RoRo vessels (2000), SCR NOx reduction on the RoRo fleet (2000), the first seagoing vessels using GTL as fuel (2015), Clean Shipping Index certification of many vessels in our fleet (2018). Our vessels are being equipped with fuel monitoring systems which together with some other technical features give more guidance to ship and shore how to reduce the fuel consumption of our existing fleet.

The next phase will be the change to another type of fuel. In consortia with other partners, we investigate the possibilities of fuels like methanol, hydrogen and electricity. One thing is sure, there is no magic solution for the whole shipping industry, therefore we must invest in research together to speed up the transition process.
